Representative sub-junior sides from Monash City were invited to the 2006 Castlefield Shield tournament on Saturday 9 September. The tournament is an annual showcase of some of the best U8, U9 and U10 players in Melbourne's south-east region.
The Monash U10s squad won their age-group thrashing host club Sandringham City 3 - 0 in the grand final. This is the third time in the past 4 years our 10s have won the event since the tournament was initiated in 2002. The team had tough opposition beating Box Hill (1 - 0) and South Melbourne (2 - 0) on the way to reach the grand final. Congratulations to coaches Ahmet Yalaz and Vince Foti for an outstanding performance, and well done to all the players.
The U9s were placed in a tough group and failed to make the semi-finals after two draws and a loss in their group matches. U9s Coach George Dimopoulos was very impressed with the standard of the U9s teams in the competition and believes the players have gained a lot of experience from the event to move into U10s for next season.
The U8s went through to the semi-finals with two wins and a loss in their group stage, only to go out by a single goal to nil against Box Hill in the semi final. Coach Steve Andrejic and the players gained a useful induction to tournament football and will strive to get to the grand final stage this time next year.
