MONASH CITY 12 def STONNINGTON 0 (Half-time 5-0)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
Preparation is the key to any successful performance and Steve Calderone's charges came prepared for the opening game of the season with a will to perform and an action plan that would execute that performance. The heavens had opened up the evening before and Caloola Reserve was picture green on a crisp morning with the sun out - great conditions for football.
The Monash boys took the game up to their Stonnington opponents from the outset and kept the opposition ensconced in their half of the pitch for the duration of the match. A procession of goals ensued with the best probably coming off a swinging volley from the boot of Francesco. When defenders were rarely called upon attacks by Stonnington were met with stonewalling defence. A 5-0 half-time score was matched in the second half for a 12-0 final score.
Tom had little to do in goals as wave after wave in the opposition penalty area made for a demoralising debut for the Stonnington side. A dozen goals were shared around by the likes of Francesco (5), Sam (3), Donnell (1), Gabriel (1), James R. (1), Marcus (1).
It will be important in games like these for the team to focus on maintaining discipline and their positions and not mill in the opposition penalty area. The game plan has to remain the same for weak teams as it is for stronger opposition..positioning, ball movement and player movement in support are paramount for continued on field success and improvement.
Next week the team travels away to play against Doncaster Rovers a team which will provide a sterner test for Monash City.

DONCASTER ROVERS 0 lost to MONASH CITY 2 (Half-time 0-1)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
A good morning with still conditions and a flat, well grassed track at Doncaster Rover's number two ground was what awaited the teams for their game in this second round fixture of the season. Doncaster Rovers in their traditional yellow and green strips greeted the all-white outfitted Monash City.
Monash put the heat on early and in several offensive moves had the Rovers on the backfoot and defending in their back thrird of the pitch. There was good use of the width with Donnell on the right and Ryan on the left. Domination of the midfield with Sam and James R. allowed plenty of opportunities for Francesco and Stefan up forward but as these players found out the direct route to goal was blocked by the Rovers defenders and keeper alike. Stretching the defence wide proved to be the answer that resulted in the first Monash goal. Sam controlled the ball in midfield and found Donnell out wide on the right who brought the ball to the edge of the penalty area and cut the ball back into Sam's path. The clinical finish with which Sam placed the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net made for an impressive first goal.
The Rovers responded with a pressing game that brought the ball dangerously towards their penalty area where Franco and Lucas and Gabriel proved resolute in denying goal scoring chances to the opposition. When the ball breached the defence provided by the back four Tom would be on hand to mop up. Monash were apprehensive and needed a second goal to shore up their confidence. Alex R. and Alex S. both had opportunities directly in front of goals but managed to scoop their shots into the waiting arms of the Rovers' goalkeeper.
Half-time scoreline Doncaster Rovers 0 - Monash City 1.
The second half began as with the first with Monash camped in the opposition half. Good drive was being delivered via Lucas and Franco from the centre of the Monash defence. James B. linked well with Marcus on the left flank and George-William (when substituted) providing the forwards with a number of opportunities that always seemed to end up in tame shots on goals well saved by the opposition keeper.
Highlights in this second half included an overhead attempt by Donnell (from a corner) that looped just over the crossbar. Shots on goals saved by the keeper from Sam (x 2) and James R. (x1).
The second Monash goal came by a way of three passing moves that involved Donnell to James R. to Stefan who slotted the ball home from inside the area.
Numerous other opportunities went begging with shots on goal by Marcus and another when Alex R. ran into the penalty box and tried to cut the ball across the face of goal. The ball deflected off the keeper's legs and went narrowly wide of the upright for a corner. Monash kept pressing for another goal and were almost made to pay for pushing too far forward when the Rovers forward were put through the middle. One on one with our keeper Tom, it looked as if a consolation goal would be on the cards for Doncaster. To his credit Tom made himself big coming off his goal line and was at the feet of the oncoming Rovers forward to parry a shot. A clean scoresheet was the end result as the referee blew full time moments later.
Monash came away with a well deserved 2-0 away win and next week Monash City is at home to the Eastern Lions..

MONASH CITY 4 def EASTERN LIONS 0 (Half-time 3-0)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), Gabriel Chait (6), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
We are expriencing calm Sunday mornings which make for perfect football playing weather. Today was no exception as Monash played host to the Eastern Lions in this third round encounter. The Lions had suffered a 3-0 away loss to Bulleen the week earlier so Monash would be in a positon to gauge if their peformance is on a par with other opposition sides.
The match began brightly enough with Monash pressing and giving the Lions no room with which to forge attacks from the midfield. Use of the flanks and the invitation by players to have other team mates support made for neat interplay and allowed the fullbcaks the opportunity to advance further afield and even help out in attacks. Gabriel on the right and Marcus on the left provided the links for many switched plays acros the backline and the support awarded to Donnell and Alex S. on the right and left wings respectively. When Alex R. was asked to play right back he slotted into the game plan ever so neatly. Franco and Lucas are shaping up as a solid and complementary central defensive duo and Tom in goals was not really tested for the duration of the game.
The midfield is dynamic and possesses strength through the likes of Sam and James R and George-Willliam. Their drive maximises the opportunities granted to the forwards.
The customary opener from James R came in the first 10 minutes (a looping shot that beat the keeper) and this player does his best work when afforded time on the edge of the penalty box (1-0). From a corner minutes later the ball flicked off a Lions defender and Stefan swooped onto it with a headed goal(2-0). Monash applied the screws and forged further ahead through a strike by Francesco just before the half-time break. (Half-time 3-0).
Try as they might Monash could not add many more goals throughout the second half until the very end. The Lions put bodies behind the ball at every opportunity and defended grimly in their own half. Monash kept a semblance of shape and discipline and had several opportunities with players one on one with a solitary defender to beat (outrun). Ryan had his run on goal halted inside the penalty box. George-William saw the ball come across him at the edge of the penalty box but chose to square the ball rather than shoot.
At the moment Caloola is recovering as a playing surface but sections of it are still bereft of grass cover. At the pavilion end of the ground the cut up turf makes it impossible to pass the ball across the penalty area with any certainty. Chances made in the second half always bobbed up and players miscued their shots on goal. On one occasion Stefan put Francesco through after a darting little run at the edge of the penalty area...but the ground conditions and the covering defender beat his effort.
A long through pass by James R allowed Francesco to run one on one with the last defender and when the latter was beaten Francesco still had some work to do with his effort on goal. Placing it low in the corner would hve been the obvious outcome but Francesco managed to scoop the shot into the top left hand corner for the final (4-0) score.
Asked later if he had meant to do it...Cesc was humble enough to admit that he had not meant for the shot to be so extravagantly put away. You have a lot to learn, Francesco..your reply should be " I always meant for it to go in goal like that". Golfers get asked if their shots at the hole are lucky when they go in from a tee shot or the fairway...they reply "..of course I meant it to go in..I was aiming for the hole". Similarly the footballer always aims to have his shot go in the back of the net..no matter how he gets it there -they all count!
Overall a solid performance from the Monash City side who are consolidating the promising start to the season with effective good team football that has been rewarded with maximum points from three games and clean sheets thus far. The test may well be against Bulleen away next week. A clean sheet next week will go a long way to cementing Monash City's position amongst the leading group in this league.

BULLEEN LIONS 1 drew with MONASH CITY 1 (Half-time 0-1)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9),James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
Injured: George-William Kambranis(4),
Football is a winter sport and on the day the elements really tested the players of both sides at the Veneto Club-home of the Bulleen Lions, a team vying for top spots in this league. The pitch had soaked up most of the previous day persistent rain and downpours. The pitch was soggy underfoot with patches of the ground reduced to muddy puddles - misty conditions greeted the teams as they warmed up pre-match. Monash had come with a determination to see out the game and not lose top spot on the table and to that end mission accomplished.
The kick-off underlined the quality of the opposition team when Monash could not get their feet to the ball in the first five or six passes that commenced the game as Bulleen came at the Monash midfiled and defence with purpose. In these early exchanges the intervention of Lucas and Franco in the centre of the back four and Gabriel and James B. ably assisting at right and left back respectively ensured that attacks were duly thwarted. Gabriel and Lucas in particular anticipated the ball's position when driven into their zones and intercepted passes in front of their opposition players (not easy in slippery and greasy conditions where the ball can suddelly zip past you unless you put your body on the line). On one occasion when the defence was breached Bulleen pressed and let fly a shot across the face of Tom's goal-this was not going to be a game where either goalkeeper would not have some influence on the outcome.
Good use of the flanks was made when passes out wide to Alex S. on the left and Donnell on the right allowed width in attack to stretch the Bulleen defence. Several opportunities to cross the ball came the way of Monash and most of these were dealt easily by Bulleen. When James R. had the opportunity to test the keeper from the edge of the area he did so with a stinging low drive that the Bulleen keeper managed to get his body behind but duly spilled in fort of him. Francesco was there backing up and ready to pounce and the spilled ball was there to be contested. After a few frantic attempts by the keeper to claw back the ball and with Francesco also trying to get possession of the ball, the referee blew for an infringement on the keeper and the attack was stymied. (we thought it was harsh & so did a Bulleen official after the game).
Undaunted Monash set about making use of their territorial advantage. Dogged persistence was typified by an exchange involving Alex S. on the forward flank when he managed to prevent the ball from being easily cleared by the Bulleen players and put in three spirited tackle in a ten second exchange-gripping stuff that encourages team mates to do their utmost. Everybody was switched on by now.
Sam began to control the midfield and alongside him James R. began he exchanges that set the groundwork for the opening goal. Finding Donnell out wide and Donnell duly finding Francesco forward of his position no-one expected the well timed cross that rifled across the edge of the six-yard box and at the waiting feet of Stefan. One touch to control, two to round the keeeper and with the third into the net the ball went.
Monash were in front and brimming with confidence. Composure rather than complacency set in as every player focused on getting to half-time with the precious 1-0 lead. Marcus at right back replaced Gabriel who required a rest and Peter in place of Alex S. allowed fresh legs to keep up the momentum on the left flank. Pete provide a zinger of a cross just moments after coming on that narrowly missed the head of Francesco in front of goals. Half time and Monash were 1-0 to the good.
The intensity in play resumed in the second half as Monash made good use of their territorial advantage to push for the second and hopefully sealing goal. Bulleen had their chances when play broke through the central defence and on these occasions Tom came off his line promptly to save at the feet of oncoming forwards. Twice these efforts managed to keep Bulleen at bay and it looked as the situation was safe in Monash's keeping. Alex R. came on the right wing to replace Donnell and good combination between he and Ryan and James R. managed to press Bulleen and keep them in their own half. The through balls that were attempted by both sides were easily dealt with by the respective defences. A ball to Francesco on the edge of the area was met with a swinging, hooked volley attempt and a total miss of the ball resulted (I don't think even his dad Terry would hit a fresh air shot like that on the golf course).
Bulleen kept at the Monash boys and were duly rewarded when a breakthrough ball found a forward with enough momentum to carry him past chasing defenders. As Tom came off his line (perhaps prematurely) the ball was slid past him for the equaliser..(1-1).
All of a sudden Bulleen had momentum and had another opportunity minutes from the end where only the vigilance of Lucas (who ran with the advancing forward and managed to slide the ball from him with the goals wide open0 prevented Bulleen from getting the winner. That the attacker was able to get so far without being challenged until the very last perhaps reflected the decreased intensity with which Monash finished the game.
Plucky to get ahead but lucky to finish 1-1. The story of Monash's eventful sojourn on a cold and wet day. It's tough (and tight) at the top!

SOUTH YARRA 0 lost to MONASH CITY 5 (Half-time 0-1)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9),James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11),George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
Beautiful and crisp playing conditions greeted players at Fawkner Park home to the Arsenal-clad South Yarra. Monash were appreciative of the good 40 minute warm up in preparation for the game and when it got under way, Monash pinned the opposition into their own half. The orders from Coach Steve Calderone would be to maintain shape and for the players to recognise the most suitable avenues to attack that would enable Monash to break the opposition defence. Above all the team had to have patience - the results would come if discipline were maintained.
Franco had a break from his customary place in defence and was tried in the midfield on the right. Lucas was the solitary defender in the centre and with James B. and Alex R. at right and lef back respectively Tom cut a lonely figure in goal and his lonely existence wasn't about to get better during the course of the game.
Early forays into the penalty box by Stefan and Donnell on the right flank came to nothing as South Yarra crowded the defence. Switching play to the left flank provided Alex R., Peter and Alex S. with good combination play and the creation of two reasonable chances to carve up the defence. In one of these chances a ball across the penalty box was met by Sam for a clinical finish to register the first score.( 1-0 to Monash)
The defence and midfield of George, James and Gabriel were rarely troubled during this first phase of the match but for their part Monash rarely threatened the South Yarra goal to bring the teams into the break at 1-0 in Monash's favour.
Monash piled on the pressure in the second half and began attacking the right side of the field through Francesco, Donnell and James. James sought the direct route to goal by evading oncoming tackles and getting behind the defence. With only the goalkeeper to beat James chose to drive the ball in spectacular fashion towards the top right corner of the goal and brought about a good save from the keeper who turned the ball round the post for a corner. Corner after corner came to nothing as crosses into the box were easily dealt with by the Sth Yarra keeper. The flood gates were partially prized open when a strong cross from the right by Francesco was mishandled by this same keeper and Ryan was on hand at the far post to tap the ball in for his first goal. Marcus came close to getting his name on the scoresheet with a run that was halted at the byline. (2-0 to Monash)
A similar situation on the right minutes later by the Francesco led to the keeper diverting the ball into the net when he could not stop the cross towards the near upright. At 3-0, Monash were cruising and added pressure led to a scramble in the six yard box leaving Ryan to score the second of his brace and undo the good defensive work by South Yarra in the fist half. (4-0 to Monash)
James R. got on the scoresheet late in the half with one of the last kicks of the game when he lobbed a long ball form the edge of the area into goals. The keeper frantically tried to flap the ball away but the ball spilled over the line and sealed he 5-0 win for Monash City.
Matches like these test the resolve of the team to play to a workable system that will work against stronger opposition. On the day Monash were never pressured they way they will be in coming weeks. Results elsewhere consigned Monash to second place in this division on goal difference ...every effort becomes important..every goal scored and conceded as with every point earned will count towards the final standings.

MONASH CITY 4 defeated MANNINHAM 0 (Half-time 2-0)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9),James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11),George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
Foggy mist hung over Caloola Reserve for the duration of this game between Monash City and Manningham Football Clubs. Monash had a full complement of players to choose from and began brightly in greasy and still conditions. Pinned in their own half and with only the odd sporadic venture forward, Manningham defended grimly right to their goal line for most of the game.
Attacks by Monash were varied and swift but crosses into the penalty area came to nothing as the Manninham keeper handled everything that came his way and foiled several opportune shots on goal. Moves were begun from the midfield and sometimes from the back four formation of Lucas, Franco, James B. on the left and Alex R. at right back. In the midfield George- William imposed himself at every opportunity and together with Gabriel and James R. kept the pressure on the manningham back four by providing runa and support atevery opportunity. At about the 10 minute mark of the first half a neat one-two give and return between Marcus and Alex R. saw the latter take the ball forward to the limit of the penalty box wherein he found Francesco in support.
Francesco whipped the ball inside to Sam who shot into the left low corner to put Monash 1-0 up. It had taken a while but Monash then eased into their game of passing and switching play, providing ample support for each other in times where occasions required quick ball movement. Monash City's second goal came from a lofted left foot strike by James B. who had supported the play right to the edge of the penalty box and took his chance when the opportunity arose.
Monash took their 2-0 lead to the break .
The second half began as with the first with Monash players thundering towards goal and putting in dangerous crosses that often found a stray foot or shin of an opposition player and were deflected for numerous corners. At set kicks Monash could not convert a single chance relying on goals from open play to shore up their scoreline.
Donnell was quickly on the scoresheet when he thundered a shot that the keeper could not keep from going through his hands and the same player delivered a cross from the right that was met cleanly by Sam for his individual brace in the match. Numerous other chances fell to Ryan. Twice in front of goal he was denied by both the keeper and minutes later by a Manningham player that prevented the ball from going in by lunging at the shot and deflecting it with his leg).
James R. had a similar experience to Ryan when from close range he kicked the ball into the keeper's hands....Manningham were not going to lie down and give Monash the satisfaction of a rout.
Monash had a goal disallowed for offside when Donnell glided a cross from the right and onto the head of Stefan at the far post who neatly guided the shot into the net.
The final whistle heralded a good win for Monash City with a scoreline that was not allowed to get out of hand by a resolute Manningham defence.

ASHBURTON 1 lost to MONASH CITY 3 (Half-time 1-1)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9),James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11),George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),
Wonderful conditions at Warner Reserve as Ashburton played hosts to a determined Monash City side who looked to have the game in their keeping for the first 10 minutes of the game and then, having succumbed to an equalising goal just before the close of the half, played out a nervous second half where the game and the full points were rescued.
The game began brightly enough with Lucas firing just wide after the kick off and threatening to make his runs into the penalty area count. Attack after attack just couldn't provide Monash with the opener and Francesco also fired a meek shot at the Ashburton keeper.
Movement on the flanks provided by Marcus on the left and Donnell on the right with plenty of opportunity for incursions into the penalty area. Crossed balls came to nothing so the option to run and cut into the penalty box almost rewarded Monash with balls strafing across the six yard box and with no-one to follow in the driven shot/cross.
Monash's first goal came by way of a simple move along the left flank. From the throw in the ball was worked between Marcus and Ryan to the feet of Francesco who (with his back to goal) calmly laid the ball back to the oncoming George-William. This player lofted the ball over the keeper's head from just outside the penalty area. Monash had their first goal and appeared in control. The defence proved resolute in keeping the opposition out and Ashburton piled on some pressure from a number of conceded corners. A poor defensive clear out from Monash was eagerly pounced on by an Ashburton midfielder who slotted a well-weighted through ball to his advancing forward. With Tom committed to coming out off his line the Ashburton player rolled the ball under Monash's oncoming goalkeeper and over the goal line for the equalizer. Monash had two half chances to score before the end of the first half but the ball was not met cleanly enough by Alex S. and the keeper coolly dealt with these. For their own part monash were on the backffot for the remainder of the first half with pressure on Franco and Lucas being maintained. hey stood up to it.
At the end of the first term an indirect free kick for Monash inside the penalty box went metres over the bar so that the 1-1 scoreline remained unchanged till half-time.
The second half changes involved the inclusion of James R. in the centre of midfield and alongside him Stef and Sam with Alex R., Peter and Alex S. working the left flank and Donnell occupying an outside right position. Lucas dropped back into a defensive midfield role awith Gabriel and Alex R. in the right and left wingback positions respectively. Monash City piled on the pressure but were getting nowhere fast . Composure was lacking in front of goals as everyone was eager to get Monash in front again. In these circumstances the players must remain calm and do the basic things right - discipline and teamwork would get the results.
The action that resulted in the second monash goal came from the left as Sam and then James moved the ball wide to Pete who found Alex S. running wider still. Alex bought himself a yard of space and whipped the ball across the six yard box for Stefan to opportunistically tap in from close range. (1-2). Stef's reflexes in the six yard box are the stuff of legends. Tails were up and Monash went looking for the third goal to make things secure. When it did come it involved the actions of James B. who threw the ball in to Alex R. passing to Francesco who in turn played the ball across the six yard box to Marcus. If Monash's second goal was instinctive, then this proved level headed and calculated. Marcus had the ball delivered to him at mid thigh level by Francesco. He stopped the ball, had time to allow it to bounce and netted it in one precise movement. (1-3)
This was the goal that snuffed out any resurgence on the part of Ashburton who had taken the game up to Monash till then. A good tight contest that will aid both sides's confidence for the season ahead.
Next week Monash will host Box Hill in a top two clash at Caloola Reserve.

Monash City moved two points clear at the top of their group table with a well earned 2-0 win over Box Hill.
An overall good team effort with sustained pressure saw a goal mouth scramble in the first half lead to the first of Monash's goals via the boot of Stefan.
In the second half the same player was on the end of a telling cross from Donnell to head the home side to a 2-0 lead which the team carried to full-time.
Next week's round concludes the end of the first half of the season.

BOOROONDARA EAGLES 0 lost to MONASH CITY 5 (Half-time 0-2)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9),James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11),George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),Franco Vanni (8),

Miserable winter conditions were the order of the day for this away fixture to Booroondara Eagles in a game that was totally dominated by Monash City who pressed home their advantage to the tune of 5 unanswered goals throughout the game.
Wet weather football distinguishes those that are determined to put their bodies on the line and in that we had players aplenty. The ball was played around as best as the team could do even as the pitch became waterlogged.
Monash were two goals up in the first half thanks to some determined work on the right flank from Donnell (whose cross drifted past a group of players to dribble across the line-did Peter get a touch??). Later in this first half after many spurned chances and shots off target Monash got their second goal form Stefan's trusty boot which buried the ball in the customary right hand corner of the goal.
The rain by now was driving hard as half-time came and the message from Coach Calderone was to keep width and shape in the attacks that involved Monash. The second half was more of the same as Booroondara could not get the ball out of their third of the field.
Sam opened the goal scoring for Monash in this second period and further goals by Donnell and Stefan made the scoreline 5-0 in Monash's favour. An effort from Franco came off the upright and another goal-bound shot from Sam beat everyone except the quagmire that had formed in front of the goals.

STONNINGTON 0 lost to MONASH CITY 8 (Half-time 0-2)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11),George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16),

If Monash believed there was going to be a repeat of the romp that had been the home game result against Stonnington then Coach Calderone ensured that his squad went out in the right frame of mind..or so he hoped. Ryan stepped into the defensive central position and Alex R. and Alex S. provided the perfect bookends on either side of him as right and left fullbacks respectively. Gabriel and Sam and James R and George-William had the midfield to themselves and Donnell, Marcus and Francesco with support from Stefan in an offensive midfield role provided the forward thrusts.
Stonnington, as the Coach predicted, would defend their positions grimly and made the penalty box their last stand.
Despite this Monash did make some chances count as Sam waltzed through a non-existent defence to fire home the first goal. The second goal came from Francesco, after a good team move involving James R. who laid the ball back into the path of Alex S. who in turn crossed the ball to Francesco who slotted in from close range. Stefan added a third before a penalty was awarded for deliberate handball in the area by a Stonnington defender. Up stepped James R. to take the penalty. James cooly beat the keeper and the upright to slide the ball wide. More looping shots and miskicks followed and went wide much to the frustration of the Coach and his assistants. The half-time address by Coach Calderone reflected the poor performance of the first half from a Monash side that had lowered their playing standards to that of the opposition and not enhanced them as the half went by. The second half would have to be different.
Alex R. was introduced into the central defensive position and Lucas together with Ryan in midifield were ably assisted by Gabriel in the offensive midfield role. Out wide on the left the combination of Peter and Alex S. provided countless forward forays from which Monash benefited. Three goals resulted from crosses on the left flank by Peter. The beneficiaries of these crosses proved to be Sam, Stefan and Gabriel and in other moves Gabriel (lobbing the keeper) and Francesco both got their second goals for the game.
The final score of Stonnington 0 - Monash City 8 reflected a better second half performance and one that keeps Monash well placed at the top of their league table.

There was a time in the brief history of the encounters between these two sides when games were an enjoyable contest and there was meaning to the result. NOT SO NOW. Playing a Joeys side against a Kangaroo outfit does everyone more harm than good (take note administrators of Doncaster Rovers).
Beautiful morning, great ground conditions greeted the team and spectators for the game. Perhaps it was the half-time pep talk from the week before by Coach Calderone or maybe the expectation that Doncaster had always been a difficult team to get over had made Monash determined to get to a good start. Monash were three goals up by the time I had the coffee machine fixed and we sold the first of our bacon and egg rolls (good value if you want to try them on match day).
Goals came in a procession with George-William, Sam, Francesco (3), Stefan (2), James R(2), and Gabriel all getting on the scoresheet
By half time Monash were 10-0 up and the exasperation of the Doncaster players was evident.
A goalkeeping change for Doncaster made for an improvement in the second half as the new goalkeeper kept the damage to a minimum conceding four goals to James R, Ryan, James B and the pick of the lot from Alex R. who lofted the ball over the defence and left the keeper stranded as the ball found its way inside the right upright.
Fourteen goals! Best to keep the result in perspective...until next week !

EASTERN LIONS 0 lost to MONASH CITY 3 (Half-time 0-0)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), James Bouziotis (7),James Bouziotis (7),Franco Vanni (8),Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16), Franco Vanni (8),
Blustery conditions for the second week in a row made for some hectic game time for players and supporters alike. The game was heavily influenced by the wind that encamped Monash's defence in their half for the first half of the game and likewise the Eastern Lions defence for the duration of the second half.
Whilst Monash looked the part when they moved the ball (even against the wind) the Lions pounced on any misdirected pass or clearance to keep Tom in goals and Franco and Lucas in defence busy. Monash were lucky to finish the first half with a clean sheet as Eastern Lions failed to capitalise on territorial advantage. There are many teams that when faced with the prospect of playing against such a wind buckle if the first goal is conceded-thankfully for Monash this did not eventuate..
The customary half-time spray by Coach Calderone made points with respect to dangerous methods of play that prevailed in a nervous team. Playing with the aid of the wind meant that Monash could afford the occasional shot on goal in the second half.
Ryan did just that when he lobbed the keeper from distance having moved forward from his position at left back. Monash went looking for their second and it came off the boot of James R who also shot from range and beat the keeper's flailing attempt to stop the shot. The third goal came form the Dorothy-Red boots of Marcus as he followed up an offensive move by tapping in at the far post.
A 3-0 scoreline befitted this game of two halves for Monash. Eastern were unlucky not to have got themselves a consolation goal for their efforts.
Next week Monash begin winding up the straight as their season takes on Bulleen in what is expected to be a tougher game and one where all concentration is needed by every member of the squad if a result is to be achieved.

MONASH CITY 4 defeated BULLEEN LIONS 0 (Half-time 1-0)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), James Bouziotis (7),James Bouziotis (7),Franco Vanni (8),Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Scotto (15),Lucas Smycz (16), Franco Vanni (8),

A dominant display by Monash City means that the team retains their pole position for the latter half of the season. In a game where everything that was expected from the squad, all was duly delivered through discipline , hard work and a confident attitude.
Monash City had Bulleen on the ropes from the outset and pressed the opposition defence giving them no room to work the ball in midfield and making sure there was no let up for the duration of the game. On the flanks Francesco and Marcus kept the options open for the midfielders to provide plenty of defence-splitting passes. Lucas, James R. and Sam harassed the midfielders and oncoming forward players cutting their options and making them turn the ball over on countless occasions. As a result of this pressure the number of shots attempted on goals by Monash were many and one eventually made it into the back of the net by way of Francesco midway through the first half. Monash expected a counter from Bulleen but it never eventuated and the teams went to the half-time break with Monash leading 1-0.
The lads were warned about the expected comeback by Bulleen in the second half and so Monash went on the offensive - rather than defend their lead they sought to increase it. sam had a strong looping shot come off the crossbar (with the goalkeeper beaten) after the ball found its way across the edge of the penalty box following a jinking run by Stefan. Neat by-play on the right flank by Gabriel, Francesco and Sam led to the defence being stretched before the ball was cut back aross the middle of the penalty box. Sam following up slotted home Monash's second. Shortly after Stefan was rewarded following a similar move that brought about Monash's third goal and Sam rounded off the goalsoring to bring the tally to a well merited 4-0. In the dying minutes Alex S. had an opportunity saved by the keeper as his right foot effort was saved by a flying outstretched palm and the ball went for a corner.
The scoreline was impressive enough and Monash's goal was never troubled. Coach Calderone had asked the week earlier for his players to put in a better effort than they had in the opening half of their game against Eastern Lions. This they did and in consecutive weeks Monash have proved to be effective "lion tamers".

MONASH CITY 8 defeated SOUTH YARRA 0 (Half-time 4-0)
Squad: James Bouziotis (7), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto(15),Lucas Smycz (16), Franco Vanni (8),

Beautiful ground conditions with the development of a steady drizzle on a cold and wet day made keeping warm a task. Not that Monash minded as they stretched their opponents on the park and distanced themselves from South Yarra on the scoreboard. The first of many goals came from Sam playing on the right early in the first opening minutes. Lucas added a second goal before Sam scored his second and Peter added a fourth and Stefan the fifith goal to bring the half to a close.
James R opened scoring proceedings in the second half and after Sam got his third goal for the game James R. bagged a second form close in. All the goals came form neat and exact passing that is beginning to look lethal given the precise nature of the finishing. Were it not for the efforts of Monash old boy (Michael) in goals the scoreline could have been greater than the 8-0 scoreline.

Bright and still conditions on a flat and slightly narrow track at Timberidge Reserve for this the penultimate away game for the lads before they take on Box Hill in their final away game in a fortnight's time.
Monash began in bright fashion and had Manningham retreating to defend their penalty box in grim fashion. The opener for Monash came from the now customary boot of Sam who had made his way in to the box and after a scramble from the Manningham defence to get the ball clear, made sure of the goal from six yards out. Monash looked comfortable and had their second goal five minutes later from a similar situation when Pete got onto a shot from within the penalty area. The 2 - 0 scoreline is what the teams took to the half-time break.
Shortly after the restart Monash were set back on their heels by a Manningham side determined not to be a pushover. From a scramble inside the six-yard box which the Monash defenders failed to clear, a shot on target was foiled by Tom and the loose ball was cannoned home for Manningham to bring the scoreline to 2-1..game on.
Indecision in defence had cost Monash their 2-0 lead, and it was indecision on the part of the Manningham defenders that had Pete score his second and hat-trick goals respectively and had Monash's lead out to a comfortable 4-1 scoreline.
Franco chimed in with an impressive volley shortly after that and had his brace following good set up play from Pete on the left with a shot that rolled along the ground. In between these efforts James B. was on the end of a cutback pass from Stefan and buried his shot into the roof of the net.
The 7-1 scoreline reflected a good team effort by Monash with a bit of a wake up call early in the second half.
Next week the team hosts Ashburton, a side that gave the team a real scare for the duration of their first round encounter.

Nothing like a wet day to bring two teams level as happened to Monash for the best part of the game.
Ashburton relied on grim defence to keep a clean scoresheet and their last man (goalkeeper) could not be faulted or beaten after repeated chances were repelled by him (probably best on ground).
When the first goal did go in by James R. it was followed in quick succession another from Stefan as the heavens kept pelting down. The 2-0 scoreline was a reasonable return for the teams' efforts during this first period and after a welcome half-time respite from the elements for both teams.
The rest was only too brief as Monash came out in the second half to put a seal on the game with another four goals from Sam, Peter and two more to Stef for his hat-trick.
Dominant midfield , defence solid as ever, Tom with little to do in goals yada, yada, yada......Christ, it was cold!

l think that these are games are that we enjoy getting up early for - a contest with meaning, respect for the opposition and passion for the result. Monash had only to make sure of a result for this game to ensure that their position at the top could not be threatened by a Box Hill team that had virtually matched results game for game virtually all year.
The game started brightly enough with Monash pressing early and creating a number of opportunities which were denied by a tight defensive Box Hill unit. One great diagonal through-ball by James R found Stefan running on to goals on his own and with only the keeper to beat Stef managed to spray his shot wide. The end to which Monash were kicking would prove to be the attacking end of the ground and not long after a forward move involving James R in midlfield led to the ball breaking free in the middle of the penalty area and Alex S. was on hand to shoot the ball low into the right hand upright to register Monash's first goal.
Box Hill were stung into action and what followed for the remainder of the first half was plenty of midfield sparring with no definite chances created for the duration of the half.
If Monash had deserved their lead in the first half then they were lucky to keep it to 1-0 in the second half as Box Hill came out firing and had two great chances to level the score and hit the lead. Good goalkeeping from Tom meant that Box Hill were thwarted on consecutive occasions when it looked more likely that they would score. Grim defending from Franco and Lucas in the centre, Gabriel at right back and Ryan at left back meant that the goals were not going to be forthcoming for Box Hill. On the occasions when Monash did break out from midfield and out wide, the last two defenders for Box Hill cleared any threatening through balls.
The game ended with the same scoreline as at half-time with Monash erupting into celebration holding their 1-0 scoreline.
Brave effort on the part of both sides. We enjoy this kind of history being made between the two Clubs and look forward to the rivalry continuing in years to come...as it stands the score is two wins apiece over the last two seasons...well done Monash to clinch the title in style and to Box Hill for running the contender to the wire.

MONASH CITY 7 def BOOROONDARA 0 (Half-time 3 -0)
Squad: Francesco Antonino (9), Gabriel Chait (6), Peter Dimopoulos (2), Marcus Henriques-Gomes (10), Donnel Kaka (11), George-William Kambranis(4), Ryan Newbond (3), Sam Nikolovski (12), Stefan Papageorgiou (14),Tom Pateras (GK), James Rasool (17), Alex Ross (5), Alex Scotto(15), Lucas Smycz (16), Franco Vanni (8),

As division leaders for the duration of the season Monash City hosted Booroondara and hoped to finish off in style going the season without losing a game. The first goal was on the board within minutes from the boot of Sam and things looked ominous for Booroondara who to their credit they held out after this initial setback and on several occasions pressed the defensive half of Monash without ever threatening the goals. Franco had a terrific shot on goals rebound off the inside of the upright and bak into the field of play with the goalkeeper beaten. That would have been a highlight if it had gone in.
The addition of two more goals by Peter and Stefan by Monash before the half-time interval gave Monash a comfortable 3-0 buffer.
At the resumption of play Coach Calderone deided to give Tom a run on the ball in lieu of his inactivity in goals (Tom could have done with this more often during the year- in fact had Tom scored [and he came close on one occasion] it would have meant that all players in this U-11 squad would have got their name on the scoresheet at least once this year).
Six second half goals came from the team in this half to round off the 9-0 scoreline. The scorers were Francesco for a brace, Gabriel for his own two, Donnel and finally Peter for the completion of the scoreline
This year represented a very sucessful season for this squad which was handled professionally by Steve Calderone and his assistant Pankhu Chulu and in his debut managerial season Gabriel Vanni. Everyone made an effort to be there for the boys throughout the year and that has been very much appreciated. Thank you all for your help and togertheness throughout the year.

BORN - 18th November, 1985 in Lusaka (capital of ) ZAMBIA.
Have one brother and one sister. Started primary school in 1992 (age 7) and completed secondary school in 2003.
My tertiary schooling involved graduating with a Diploma in the field of Computer Information Systems (UK -2004) and in 2005 attended the Australian Institute of Business nad Technology (Lusaka, Zambia) where I studied Foundation Studies in Business and came to Australia in 2006 to further my studies in this field where I attained a further Diploma.
I am currently looking at starting an on-line trading business.
FOOTBALL HISTORY :
I started playing street football at the age of five and joined a footballing academy at the age of nine. At age 10 I played in an Under 12 team and by the age of 11 in an under 14 team. School took precedence by the time I was 13 and my parents sent me to boarding school to further my education. My football came second to my studies and as I grew older i found that friends that I grew up with made their mark in the Zambian national teamand some even signed professional contracts with European clubs.
I have played in almost all positions on the football field from goalkeeper to striker and enjoyed playing in midfield and on the wing.
COACHING HISTORY :
I began coaching U12 and U15 sides in Zambia after completing secondary school in 2003 and was successful in coaching these sides to second place in tournaments heled that year. I took a year from coaching because of studies and resumed coaching in 2005 only to resign my position to come to Australia.
I replied to an inquiry from Steve Calderone a month ago and am now at Monash City F.C.
"Football has been my passion and I want to continue with my coaching career in the coming years. I have developed a passion and love for the sport since the age of six and have always wanted to participate and contribute to the sport ever since."

TEAM HISTORY
A core of the current player group formed the players taken on by Mid Pica at an U/8 level that have progressed to the current Under 11 squad.
At the U/9 level George Dimopoulos took the team through the 2006 season.(see match reports for 2006
).
In 2007 the squad was taken by Manny Katakis in a year of academy style training as the U/10 Kangaroos.
Steve Calderone, the current coach, took over at short notice at the start of the 2008 preseason and is hoping with the help of all squad members to get the team groomed for next year.
