Saturday 20th may & Sunday 21th May
Monash city Vs Box Hill Inter
The wait was over, it was finally Saturday morning The game both the players and the coaches had been waiting for.
Today would be the biggest test of the season yet for the Monash Under 8 warriors. By 8.30am the boys were being put through their warm ups and looked calm and relaxed which was a total contrast to what the coach looked like. I noticed Box hill doing the same on the other side of the ground and thought they actually looked quite sharp which was a little worrying to me.
The gamecommenced and Monash were on the attack from the start with a surging runs through box hills midfield and great team work 5 mins in to the game a dangerous ball was put through the midfield into Box hills defense which Brendan pounced on had no trouble steering it past the goal keeper for Monashes first goal..To which the crowd sent out a huge roar. What a start!! and more importantly a fantastic play created by our boys..
Box hill kicked off and seemed to lift a gear which caught our defense and keeper napping and resulted in a equalizer to Box hill Which I am sure brought back memories from our last encounter against Box hill where they camefrom behind and beat us..
Monash again started to pile on the pressure which led to their keeper making a mistake and another goal to Monash.
The pressure didn't stop and with more chances being created I felt it wouldn't be long before we had another goal which came via a probing corner taken by Nicholas which landed in front of Andrew who made no mistake and smashed the ball in the back on the net.. 3-1
It was a good contest but our boys had the edge and confidence going into half timewith a 3-1 lead. We knew it was no timeto relax as Box hill had pegged us back last time. Travis who had done a great job in goals in the first half made way for Kendal who ends up being equally as good.
Box hill started the second half on fire but just couldn't break down our Defense with Bas, Jesse and Jake rock solid on the day Box hill couldn't get near the goal. Great job guys!!!
Then another slip up by Box hills keeper landed in front of Nicholas who made no Mistake 4-1 and it all seemed too much to comeback now..but to their credit they didn't give up..
Next Monash was awarded a free kick just out side the area which after a little practice at training the boys finally got right and Andrew blasted the free kick past the keeper for another...5-1
Then the Midfield took control and kept applying even more pressure
With led by Thomas who was having a great game combined well with Emil Nicholas Andrew and Travis created another.. 5-1
But Box hill wasn't finished and weren't going to just give up and
somehow Box hill managed to thread a shot past our defenders and keeper to make the score 6-2.
But Monash left the best to last with Nicholas taking control of the ball proceed to waltz past 3 Box hill defenders and deliver a stinging cross to Antonio who had the game sense and awareness to know not to follow the ball but to hold his position smashed the ball in the back of the net not even needing to control it first which was a sign of just how much confidence the team had in them self..
Box hill tried hard but at the end our boys were just too good on the day. The timing was right and the boys delivered their best performance of the season without giving Box hill much of a sniff.(final score 7-2) There has been a tremendous improvement as the year has progressed and a lot of the credit must be given to Steve for his great coaching.
Sunday was quite an easy win against North Caulfield 9-0 Which was a very inexperienced team but with time will improve.
It was good to see Thomas starting to get amongst the regular goal scorers with 2 and also Matteo with his first goal for the season...
All in all a fantastic weekend for the Warriors and the parents..
Saturday 13th May & Sunday 14th May
This week's match report is just as difficult to compile as last weeks.
I think all of you will agree that it's not about winning or losing anymore but just how good the boys are actually starting to play together and understand how the game is supposed to be played. We all saw a brand of soccer on the weekend that as parents and spectators must agree isn't usually seen at a under 8's match played by 7 & 8 year old children for that we must be proud on their progress. I don't think I can take you through every piece of action which resulted in goals as we scored quite freely all weekend, in fact I believe more than twenty goals where scored between the two games and a astonishingly over 40 goals in last four games whilst conceding none.
All the boys were fantastic for both days. The passing, defending, goal scoring and goal keeping looked so finely tuned I believe the whole team is ready for next weeks show down against Box Hill. Which with a little controversy beat us at our last meeting. But I am confident that result will be reversed this time.
That's all I can report for this week maybe next week I might take some notes and talk more about the games.
